SUEZ WINS CONTRACT FOR SLUDGE-TO-ENERGY PLANT IN ROMANIA

The city of Bucharest, Romania has selected a consortium composed of SUEZ (Paris, France; www.suez-environnement.fr), FCC – Aqualia to modernize a wastewater treatment plant and to build a treatment and sludge-to-energy plant in Glina, located southeast of the capital. This contract is worth €111 million for the consortium as a whole and €45 million for SUEZ.
The wastewater treatment plant in Glina will be rehabilitated and extended by FCC – Aqualia, in order to ultimately provide wastewater treatment services for the equivalent of 2.4 million inhabitants. The sludge will be transported to the future treatment and sludge-to-energy plant built by SUEZ, with a treatment capacity of 173 metric tons (m.t.) of dry matter per day.
This plant will have two treatment lines to recover the sludge in accordance with national and European standards. Degremont Thermylis technologies, developed by SUEZ, will be used to significantly reduce the volume of the sludge produced by the wastewater treatment plant by drying and then recovering energy, with a production of electricity used in part to power the plant.
The 28-month construction project will be completed at the end of 2019.
This new project in favour the circular economy represents a further step forwards in the Group’s development in this high-potential region.

THE CUSTOMER

With the full potential of digital technologies and innovative solutions, the Group recovers 17 million tons of waste a year, produces 3.9 million tons of secondary raw materials and 7 TWh of local renewable energy. It also secures water resources, delivering wastewater treatment services to 58 million people and reusing 882 million m3 of wastewater. SUEZ generated total revenues of 15.3 billion euros in 2016.

THE NEED
The city of Bucharest has selected a consortium composed of SUEZ, FCC – Aqualia to modernise the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) and to build a treatment and sludge-to-energy plant in Glina, located south-east of the capital.

The wastewater treatment plant in Glina will be rehabilitated and extended by FCC – Aqualia, in order to ultimately provide wastewater treatment services for the equivalent of 2.4 million inhabitants. The sludge will be transported to the future treatment and sludge-to-energy plant built by SUEZ, with a treatment capacity of 173 tonnes of dry matter per day.

This plant will significantly reduce the total volume of sludge produced in the WWTP, using SUEZ’s incineration technology and Turboden Organic Ranking Cycle technology to generate electricity which will be recovered as part of the electricity consumed in the process.

This new project in favour the circular economy represents a further step forwards in the Group’s development in this high-potential region.

OUR SOLUTION
Two Turboden ORC will be employed in two treatment lines to recover the sludge in accordance with national and European standards.

Degremont® Thermylis® technologies, developed by SUEZ, will be used to significantly reduce the volume of the sludge produced by the WWTP by drying and then recovering energy with thermal oil heat exchangers and a production of electricity with ORC turbogenerators by Turboden, used in part to power the plant.
